- Avoid wearing or using anything that contain lead. make ups, masks, and other costume accessories may contain lead. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible brain damage to young children.
- Experts recommend wearing make up instead of masks and hair-coloring products instead of wigs for safety purposes.
- Kids' outfits should be made with light colored materials to make them more visible.
- Do not bring or use anything that can harm others. For swords, knives and other accessories, they should be made from rubber or any flexible materials.
- Attach your child’s name, address and your telephone number with area code to his/her clothes in case your child gets lost or separated from you.
- Also, avoid costume ideas such as Sexy Children's Character, and anything Political.
Halloween Preparations
The fall season focuses on the Halloween events, parties and preparation. October 31, the big day is fast approaching. It's time to start preparing for the party and trick-or-treaters.Decorate the outside of your home so it will look more appealing this Halloween. Add pumpkins to your steps, the gate or the entire entrance for to add more Halloween feel at home. There are varieties of colors and sizes. Don't stick to just one color and one size. Bring out your creative side in using pumpkins as decoration so it's not the typical regular pumpkins decoration in the house. Carve those pumpkins. Don't let those pumpkins just stand in there as it is. That's not attractive at all.
A little gardening can add glamor to your Halloween decoration. Create a simple landscape with plants, flowers, and pumpkins on the frontage. To buy plants, flowers, gardening/landscaping accessories, and landscaping tips, you can visit the following in Collin County:
- Puckett’s Nursery & Landscape (972-727-1145) - 811 E Main St., Allen, TX 75002

For some cheap and cool decorations this Halloween, you can check the list of the stores we've listed above, under the Costume and Make-Ups section. The same stores also offer Halloween decorations.
- Clear the yard. Take off ladders, hoses, dog leashes and flower pots that can trip your visitors and trick-or-treaters.
- Add more lights around the house, driveways or gates to avoid accidents from hard-to-see objects.
- Do not use a live candle for your jack-o-lantern instead use a plug-in or battery-operated one.
- Secure your pets indoors, or arrange for them to stay somewhere else. Some pets become frightened and others may become territorial or even aggressive towards trick-or-treaters.
- Check that the path and stairs to your front door are well illuminated and clear of obstacles. While it’s tempting to create a dark and spooky home theme, poor lighting can be a major safety hazard.
- Consider healthier treat options like low-fat crackers, single-serve boxes of cereal, packaged fruit rolls or raisins; or non-food treats such as (unsharpened) pencils, stickers or coins.
- Follow community guidelines for trick-or-treating hours. If it’s dark outside, provide your child with a flashlight or glow stick to help them see steps and other obstructions.
